Il nuovo Eurocodice 2: Quali novità?

The fib supports Il nuovo Eurocodice 2: Quali novità?, which will take place online on 7 July 2023. 

After a long revision work, the new version of Eurocode 2 Part 1-1 General rules for the design of buildings, bridges and civil engineering works is coming to an end. The text, currently submitted to the formal vote, will be consolidated in the coming months. After publication, which will take place simultaneously with that of the other Eurocodes, there will be a suitable time for coexistence with the standard currently in force, to allow users to become familiar with the countless changes introduced.
There are many innovations contained in the document, which will replace the version in force since 2004 after 20 years.
The first lies in the title and, consequently, in the field of application. The new text covers, unlike the previous version, not only buildings but also bridges and liquid containment structures. An annexe dedicated to membrane structures has been introduced. But the most relevant novelty, as far as the field of application is concerned, is the introduction of rules relating to the verification of existing structures, as happened in the revision of the Model Code.
In recent years, studies and research have led to changes in the formulation of calculations and checks, the introduction of new materials, and the need to deal with the issue of sustainability. All of this is reflected in the new text of Eurocode 2.
There are numerous new annexes, which deal with various aspects of design and open up to the use of non-regulated materials in the previous edition, both as regards the concrete and the reinforcements. The text includes reinforcements in CFRP, concretes reinforced with steel fibres, concretes with recycled aggregates, reinforcements in stainless steel and in FRP.
Another important theme is that of durability, closely connected to sustainability, for which it comes introduced a new approach, more performing and less prescriptive.
To accompany the designers in reading and deepening the new text, aicap has thought of a path, which will be divided into several events. After the first presentation on 7 July, which will serve to provide an overview of the main changes, other events will follow which will be dedicated to the in-depth analysis of specific topics: it will be an opportunity to get to know first-hand the main innovations, illustrated by experts who actively participated in writing the code.
